5th September 2017: Wideopen 5 - 1 Forest Hall Redskins

Our second league game of the season found us in a midweek fixture against Forest Hall Redskins. The game kicked off and we quickly got into our rythym and controlled the game pressing our opposition really high up the pitch and they couldn't create anything of note.
We got our reward for early dominance when a loose bouncing ball was smashed home by Sam, it was a superb finish and we got the 1-0 score line we deserved.  You could see our confidence was building after that goal and we carried on putting the opposition under pressure and causing them problems. Mikey sent Mitchell through on goal but just as he was about to finish the chance he was hauled down inside the area to give us a chance to add to our goal from the penalty spot. Sam stepped up and blasted an unstoppable penalty to make it 2-0. We looked very comfortable for the remainder of the half and our back 4 and keeper were dealing with everything really well. The half time whistle blew and it was a great half of football, the lads were told to just keep it up and we could add to our goals tally.
The second half kicked off and we seemed to have taken our foot off the accelerator and sat back inviting pressure. Forest Hall capitalised on this and pulled a goal back from a well struck free kick.
At 2-1 the pressure was on us to regain our composure and get back to what we were doing in the first half.  After a little wobble, the lads started to relax and get back to work. The midfield started to command again and we were creating chances more frequently.
We made  it 3-1 when Mikey showed great technique to volley home from the edge of the area.
We knew that we had the momentum and needed to keep going to put this game to bed.
The lads stepped it up again and we soon made it 4-1 when Mitchell raced clear and chipped the oncoming keeper, great goal and we really looked like we had done enough to win this now.
Forest Hall looked like a beaten team and just before the end, Mitchell scored his second with a close range header from a corner. The final whistle blew and it finished 5-1.
Tremendous result lads and we looked a lot sharper today. The defence and keeper were solid and it's a great sign going into next weeks game. Keep up the good work, lads.

Goals: Mitchell (2), Sam (2), Mikey
Man of the Match: Kieron

3rd September 2017: Cramlington Lions v. Wideopen Warriors

Finally the day had came for us to play a league game after a very long summer break.
Everyone was excited to get back into some competitive action. Our season started with us away at Cramlington United Lions.
The game kicked off and both sides looked rusty following the summer lay off and the game was scrappy in midfield with no space to operate. Not surprisingly, the first goal was scored by a set piece when Sam whipped in a lovely free kick which Keiron Barrett headed home well to make it 1-0 to us.
We couldn't build on that though and soon found ourselves back level at 1-1. The first half continued to be tight and Josh was battling hard in his holding midfield role. We managed to regain the lead just before half time when a lovely move started by debutant Mikey, fed Ryan down the left wing and his cross was brilliantly finished by Daniel Duncan on his debut. The half ended 2-1 but we knew this game was far from over.
The second half started and we looked really in control after the break and pressed to further our advantage. The opposition defended well though and against the run of play we were pegged back again 2-2.
Still we pushed hard and we got our reward when Mitchell scored a fantastic free kick with 10 minutes to go. It was now a test of resolve for us because we knew we were going to have to defend well to keep the lead. Heartbreak was to follow though when we conceded the third equaliser with the last kick of the game after a defensive mix up from a corner. The whistle blew and 3-3 was the final score.  We deserved to win after our dominance in second half but a draw isn't a bad way to start this season. We will be giving everything in the next game to get our first win. Keep working hard lads.

Man of Match: Mikey

Goals: Kieron, Dan D and Mitchell
