Match Reports
11th September 2017: Whitley Bay Sporting Club 3 - 6 Wideopen

After a good opening day win against North Shields Blacks, the Warriors were expecting a tough cup game against a team from the division above.  A great turn out from the lads for a weekday evening meant that coach Graeme had choices to make in selecting the team.  He started with Harry and George up front supported by Charlie, Josh Coombs, Bruce in midfield and a defence of Ben, Jack, Max and Josh in front of Scott in goal.

The pressure was on from the first kick, with Scott called into action within the first thirty second to make a great save.  The ball was played through the Warriors' defence and Scott timed his dash out perfectly to save the striker’s shot.  The pattern of the game was quickly established with Warriors struggling to get the ball up field and relieve the pressure on their goal.  It was not long before that pressure told, with a corner being turned in off the head of one of our own defenders for an own goal.  It was quickly two, again coming from a corner and a clean header straight into the goal.

Our defence was working hard and making some great interventions but the pace of the Sporting Club team, their incisive passing and their ability to open up our defence with through balls was taking its toll.  The third goal came after we lost the ball in midfield and a quick pass through our defence saw the Sporting Club left winger run through to beat Scott with a simple shot into the corner.

Scott was arguably our busiest player.  Later on in the half he made one very fine double save, initially from a shot which he tipped out and from the resulting cross he smothered the effort from their attacker.

Despite the onslaught for the first 20 minutes, Warriors began to find their range and gradually got into the game.  Bruce and Josh in centre midfield were doing their best to break up attacks and distribute the ball, whilst Charlie created a couple of chances down the flanks.  Harry and George found it tough up front, with little to work with and the challenge of coping with the larger pitch and playing largely with their backs to goal.  Meanwhile, Jack, Ben, Josh and Max in defence continued to have their work cut out, particularly Ben in the left back position where much of their attacking threat seemed to flow through.  He made some great tackles and blocks and worked his socks off.

Harry was replaced by Nathaniel after pulling a thigh muscle after 20 minutes and it was he that got the Warriors on the scoresheet with a great individual goal.  He picked the ball up around half way on the left channel, dribbled forward and through the Sporting Club defence and then shot past the keeper.

As the half went on the pressure mounted again.  Sporting Club seemed to be quicker and sharper in almost all respects, with Warriors standing off the ball and being second to it on most occasions.  The fourth goal was simple, good passing bypassing our defence allowing the attacker to walk the ball in.

At half time, Graeme took the opportunity to change the team bringing Bruce and Josh Coombs off to be replaced by Fin and Ethan. The pattern of play resumed in the early stages of the half, though, with Scott called into early action to pull off a fine save where he came dashing out to meet the oncoming attacker and saved with his legs.

Warriors then almost scored when the ball was won in the middle, fed up to George with his back to goal and just in the opposition half.  He was through on goal but took his shot way too early when he had time, and the ball skewed high and wide.  Shortly after a good move saw a chance created for Nathaniel but his shot was over the bar.

However, Sporting Club continued to exert pressure and create chances at will.  They scored regularly throughout the half, punctuated by two further goals for Warriors.  Ethan scored from the spot after one of their defenders tripped Nathaniel, an emphatic strike into the left corner.  Jamie also scored to give the lads and supporters something to cheer.  Overall, this was a tough game against a very good football team, with some tough lessons for Warriors to take away and learn from.

Goals: Nathaniel, Ethan, Jamie.

Man of the Match: Nathaniel
