Sunday 14th January 2018: Cramlington Town Blues v. Wideopen U13 Wanderers (NEYD Cup)

The Wanderers played their first match of 2018 when they took on Cramlington Town Blues in the NEYD Cup at Cramlington Sporting Club.

After a 6 week lay off, the Wanderers were understandably rusty in the opening stages of the game. However, they dominated possession without creating any meaningful chances.

Cramlington were dangerous on the break but the Wanderers back four of Ewan Gray, Ethan Cole, Charlie Mills and Dylan Rai dealt with the pressure well, and Sam Woodward in goal was reliable when called upon.

Midway through the first half the Wanderers took the lead in spectacular fashion when Dan Armstrong scored with a looping shot from outside the box which left the Cramlington keeper with no chance.

The Wanderers dominated possession for the remainder of the first half but were unable to add to the single goal and the halftime score was 1-0 to the Wanderers.

The second half continued in the same pattern, with the Wanderers attacking at every opportunity. However, Cramlington defended in numbers and were difficult to break down.

After 15 minutes of the second half the Wanderers increased their lead when Dan Armstrong scored his second of the game. He broke through the Cramlington defence and, although his initial shot was saved, he followed up and slammed home the rebound.

Cramlington kept pushing and were extremely dangerous on the break. They reduced the arrears with ten minutes to play when a long kick from their goalkeeper dropped for their number 9 who slipped the ball beyond Sam Woodward.

The Wanderers created more chances in the final few minutes but were unable to add to their goal tally and the game finished Cramlington Town 1, Wideopen Wanderers 2.

Man of the Match: Ethan Cole.
